What's Up With All The Sick & Injured Dogs? (Becky)

I’ve officially become one of those people that lays down large chunks of money for their dog child. Charlie and his joints have a long and sorted history over the course of his three short years. Last week he had everything short of a knee replacement. Luckily I haven’t procreated human children so I keep reminding myself this is way cheaper than college and everything that comes before that. He’s worth it. I haven’t decided if he’s worth the left knee yet, though. Just kidding, you know I’ll do it.

Here’s the patient Friday night after he got home from 4 days at the Iowa State University Vet College/Clinic and was reunited with his toy box.

And here he is about 45 seconds later, exhausted after being reunited with his toy box.

So we had a pretty chill weekend convalescing and taking lots of meds (well, Charlie took lots of meds) and icing his knee, and tolerating the cone of shame…

I tell you all this not only because I love my Charlie dog, but because I'm using him as an excuse for why I haven't had anyone over for dinner or made much progress with my photo project. I did manage to pull out the light box that I borrowed from my brother approximately 6 years ago for the purposes of going through my negatives so I could pick ones to digitize. I also found the mailing label for the scanning place I sent money to over a year ago. Hopefully, they're still in business. So I've moved from the "pre-contemplation" stage and am squarely in "contemplation" mode, and even hovering right on the edge of "action." Stay tuned.

Really, Becky, you simply can't put a price on an animal-child's life. Charles once told me our cat-child has a maximum of $2,000 and I just went ahead and tacked on an extra two 0's to that number in my head. Because really. $2,000? In the 21st century? With health care costs sky rocketing out the wazoo? Not even.

Also, I really like that Charlie gets his own toy box. And Charlie With His Head in a Cone makes me want to pat his sweet Charlie head. Why do doctors do it, Charlie? The cones are so undignified (they do work, though, and I once suggested to one of Melissa's early pediatricians that maybe we could try a head cone on her to keep her from pulling off a bandage...that suggestion did not elicit the laugh I'd envisioned).

Feel better Charlie. Feel better!

There was no price limit on my good dog Shoba. After she died, I tallied up the vet bills from the time she adopted me to her death and I could have bought a nice car for the same amount. But I would have happily paid ten times that to keep her healthy for a little while longer. Best of health to Charles from me and my animal menagerie. Almost nothing better than a good dog.

Poor lovely Charlie... I so dislike those evil Cones of Shame! We tried one on Maya, but I swear, that dog's head SHRUNK and went right through it. She was like Houdini, and I'm not kidding! The vet said she'd never seen anything like it! Unfortunately, I laughed when she said that, and she, the educated vet, judged me, and that wasn't good. I'm sorry Charlie was subjected to it. No dignity at all!!!
You know what? Movement is MOVEMENT, girl. Kudos! You're getting there!
And I'm so with everyone else... Good dogs are soooo worth all of it, and John's exactly right: "almost nothing better than a good dog." Yep. Exactly!

Oh Becky and Charlie! Much love sent your ways. I too am so officially one of THOSE people, but man, thank God for our Charlies.

Cheers to your light box too Sister. I am impressed you even thought of this! You are so on the move. Yay post contemplation! :)

Charlie and I are very appreciative of everyone's well wishes. He is getting better everyday! And yes, Patresa, I'm in preparation, I can't believe I forgot preparation! Here's to forward linear movement, although I often tend to be quite circular...

I am so, so sorry to hear that your sweet Charlie dog has been ill. Poor buddy. I'm really relieved to read above that he's doing better, and hope he continues to heal and do great. Big hugs for you both. xoxox.

Poor Charlie!! I just love, love, love that you included pictures of him!! Poor baby! The cone of shame..... so sad! I can clearly see he needs his momma's attention, so that definetly leaves no room for other more frivolous things! I think you are right on track moving to "contemplation" mode. Good on ya, girl! We did something really similar when Milo was 3. He ruptured a ligament in his knee and we had him in Kansas City for a three days. We could have paid off my college loans with what we laid down for that dog, but I tell you what: worth every penny.

I'm staying tuned though!!
